Why did you choose Portland? Born & raised here, moved away for college and eventually found my way back to Portland about 15 years later because it truly is "the way life should be."
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? In general terms, I admire our lobster & fisherman, esp. in the very cold winters making the treks out to sea and really giving our great state a place on the map.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? In addition to a tour of the city, I always include stops @ the Portland Headlight, LL Bean and the Bush estate. Local fare like Haven's candies, Beal's Ice Cream, Gilbert's Chowder House are also among the pit stops.
Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? Back Bay for sure is one of the most beautiful places to view the city. There is nothing like watching the sunrise on a brisk winter morning, seeing the sea fog rise above the bay.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? We are a mini-mecca for the arts as well as fine dining. Make it a date night on a First Friday with an art exhibit and then dinner & drinks out on the town!
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? I definitely love love love the Bar of Chocolate and a must is the chocolate caramel sea salt cake!
What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? Probably the promenade. Although Portland has come together in the past year to make better use of this area (Mumford & Sons Concert, etc.) it could be utilized in so many other ways (Summer Concert Series), Winter Fest, etc.
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Summer cruise to the island, back for a late night dinner in one of the Old Port restuarants (there are sooo many) and maybe a drink with friends following. The next morning a trip to Becky's Diner is a must for breakfast; or a brunch @ Vignola's.
Do you have a serendipity spot? Where do you always bump into good people? I always bump into good people walking the Boulevard around Back Bay. It is a mecca for both fitness, socializing and fun!
I lead and create social breaks designed to reduce stress and connect people to their community.
My work is collected both locally and internationally. I've been educating art students in New England since the Millennium.
