Job Creative Director / The Fresnel Theater
Lives In South Portland
Matthew Russell is a new transplant to the Portland, ME area, but is loving the community and the arts scene here.
He has been a professional improviser for over 10 years and has been doing improv since 2001.
He has taught improv through ComedySportz (Sacramento, Portland, and World Championship), Northwest Children’s Theatre, American River College, and Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Some of his former students have moved on to perform and teach at theatres in New York, California, and Texas - including at ComedySportz, UCB, The Pack, and with YouTube’s Smosh.
He is a Certified Applied Improv - Senior Practitioner through CSz Worldwide. Aside from improv, he is an award-winning children’s entertainer, runs his own treasure hunt business, and is the owner and founder of Questionable Trivia, an award-winning bar trivia company in Sacramento, CA and Portland, OR.
Why did you choose Portland? I'm from the "other Portland" on the west coast, Portland, OR. My wife and I chose Portland for quite a few reasons, but primarily because we love the city's culture, food, and beer.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? We like to take them to our favorite food spots, donut spots, and of course a lighthouse or two. We also show them the community and public art.
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. A beer tour of the many local breweries and oyster places, followed by Holy Donut, HiFi, or both in the morning.
I orchestrate a laboratory and training ground for the international contemporary dance community.
I solve Portland's creative problems by day and push the boundaries of pop art by night.
